Description
Current Lot MARTIN JOHNSON HEADE American, 1819-1904 "View on the St. John's with Palm Trees". Signed lower left "M.J. Heade". In his letter of authentication, Heade scholar Theodore E. Stebbins, Jr. writes that "The work relates closely with Heade's larger oil, The St. John's River at the Cummer Museum in Jacksonville, which has a very similar composition. It is typical of the small (often 8" x 16") marsh and river views that Heade painted during the 1890's for the tourist-buyers who visited St. Augustine, where he lived. He handles light and atmosphere well in this work, which was painted, I believe, before his touch weakened around 1900. Provenance: Private Collection, California. Oil on canvas, 8" x 16". Framed.
